What's ICM2002?
กก

The International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) is a quadrennial congress held under the auspices of the International Mathematical Union (IMU). It is an important event of mathematicians the world over. In August 1998 the General Assembly of the IMU decided to hold its next Congress in Beijing in 2002. The Organizing Committee of ICM2002 takes pleasure in inviting you to participate in the next Congress: International Congress of Mathematicians Beijing, August 20-28, 2002.

ICM2002 will be held in Beijing from August 20 to 28, 2002. All sessions, except the opening ceremony, will take place at Beijing International Convention Center. At the Congress, mathematicians from all over the world gather to discuss recent developments in almost all fields of mathematics. The ICM2002 will feature plenary lectures covering major areas of mathematics and invited lectures presented by leading mathematicians, oral presentations at different sessions, posters, and ad-hoc talks. The selection of the plenary speakers and invited speakers will be the responsibility of the Program Committee that is appointed by IMU.

The Opening Ceremony on the first day of the Congress will be held at the Main Auditorium of the Great Hall of the People, during which the Fields Medals and the Nevanlinna Prize will be awarded.

The preparation of ICM'2002 is supported by Chinese government institutions and foundations.

To make the congress a true worldwide gathering, the Organizing Committee pays great attention to attracting scientists from developing countries and Eastern Europe. For this purpose, Committee for Support of Mathematicians from Developing Countries and Eastern European Countries (CSMDCEEC) has been set up to provide fellowships or support for young and mature mathematicians from developing countries and support for mathematicians from Eastern Europe. See circular letter #3.

The Organizing Committee is well aware of the needs of the delegates in accommodation. Hotels of different categories will be reserved for the period of the Congress and a large number of relatively cheap rooms will be offered. We will list all the chosen hotels with their rates in due time.

Finally, the Organizing Committee is preparing an interesting social and tour program for the delegates and accompanying persons. Beijing is a city of long history, and we believe that the various historical sites and museums in Beijing will leave you an unforgettable memory.

The Organizing Committee has set up an e-mail service for the prospective delegates to acquire updated information. Fill out the Preliminary Registration form today, and you will be kept informed.
